Scrittrice irlandese (n. Tuamgraney, Clare, 1930). Trasferitasi a Londra, s'impose con la trilogia composta da The country girls (1960, trad. it. 1961), The lonely girl (1962; trad. it. 1964) e Girls in their married bliss (1964; trad. it. 1990), in cui l'oppressività e il perbenismo della società irlandese sono descritti con vivace umorismo. Tra i romanzi successivi: August is a wicked month (1965); Casualties of peace (1966); A pagan place (1970); Night (1972); Time and tide (1992; trad. it. Le stanze dei figli, 1993); House of splendid isolation (1994, trad. it. 1997); Down by the river (1997, trad. it. 2014); Wild Decembers (1999); In the forest (2002); The light of evening (2006; trad. it. 2015). Oltre che commediografa (Virginia, 1979; James and Nora, 1981; Far from the land, 1989) e sceneggiatrice, è autrice di pregevoli volumi di racconti (Mrs. Reinhardt and other stories, 1978; Returning, 1982; Lantern slides, 1990). Tra i suoi lavori più recenti occorre citare la biografia Byron in love (2009), le raccolte di racconti Saints and sinners (2011) e The love object (2015; trad. it. 2016), il testo autobiografico Country girl (2012) e i romanzi The little red chairs (2015; trad. it. Tante piccole sedie rosse, 2017) e Girl (2019; trad. it. 2020).
