Attrice statunitense (New York 1924 - ivi 2014). Inizialmente interprete teatrale, si è poi affermata come fotomodella. Ha debuttato sul grande schermo come protagonista al fianco di H. Bogart in To have and have not (Acque del Sud, 1944). Da questo film in poi è diventata la partner del popolare attore, divenuto nel frattempo suo marito: The big sleep (1946), Dark passage (La fuga, 1947), Key largo (L'isola di corallo, 1948). Attrice dal fascino sottile, caratterizzato dal volto angoloso e dalla voce sensuale, ha rappresentato nel noir degli anni Quaranta un modello di dark lady. Ha inoltre interpretato How to marry a millionaire (1953); The cobweb (La tela del ragno, 1955); Written on the wind (Come le foglie al vento, 1956); Harper (Detective's story, 1966); Murder in the Orient Express (1974); The shootist (1976); H.E.A.L.T.H. (1979); Misery (Misery non deve morire, 1990); Prêt-à-porter (1994); Mirror has two faces (L'amore ha due facce, 1996); Dogville (2003); Birth (Birth - Io sono Sean, 2004); These foolish things (2006); The Walker (2007); Wide Blue Yonder (2010); The forger (2012). Nel 2010 ha ricevuto il premio Oscar alla carriera.
